How to Layer effectively for all kinds of sailing activities:
Layering is the single most important subject for sailors to
understand when they are planning what to wear. Correct layering
will keep your dry, warm, and comfortable because each layer works
with the next to draw moisture away from your skin and protect you
from the outside elements. The three basic layers are:
Base Layer. Worn next to
the skin, the base layer wicks away perspiration moisture keeping
your dry and warm. Base layer clothes are specially engineered
polyester. Often overlooked, this is a critical layer for your
comfort.
Mid or Thermal Layer.
This layer, designed to be worn over the base layer and under an
outer layer, is made of synthetic thermal fibers that assist in the
movement of perspiration moisture to the outer layer. Thermal
layers are also used to regulate your body temperature and can be
added or removed as sailing conditions change.
Outer Layer. This layer
is the waterproof and windproof layer that keeps the elements out.
They usually have very little or no thermal properties. In order to
work most effectively, no matter what type of sailing you do, the
fabric should be breathable to allow the moisture from perspiration
that has built up inside the garment to escape.

Understanding sailing apparel construction and foul weather gear
construction:
While it may that manufacturers are making it as hard as possible to
understand what you’re buying, there are two principles to be aware
of:

The kinds of fabric
Breathable fabric must be layered—it can’t be used by itself. So in
two layer garments, there’s the breathable layer (inside) and the
protective layers (outside). Three layers have an inner “comfort”
layer, the breathable layer, then the outer layer. Four layers, the
most, will usually have an inner layer, a double breathable layer,
and an outer layer.
The
“fabric system” is where manufacturers differentiate themselves the
most. But in the end, the science of breathable fabrics has become
so advanced that all the variations work extremely well. The fabric
that makes up the outer layer is an area that manufacturers take
great pride in being proprietary. The outer layer is what provides
the wind resistance and the waterproof qualities along with the
construction which includes seams that are heat sealed then taped.
