How to select Dinghy and One Design sailing apparel and sailing
clothes:
The
action on dinghies and one designs is intense. The three key
factors you need to consider are breathability, flexibility, and
protection from the elements.
Flexibility can come from both the cut of the garment and the
materials it’s made from. Many jackets and smocks are now
constructed from stretch fabrics that give you a less “bulky” cut,
yet move with your body to give you the freedom of movement you
require.
For
breathability and protection from the elements manufacturers balance
those qualities with fabric weight. Lighter is better in this
category of sailing.
Rashguard Basics:
Gill Rashguards, GUL Rashguards, and Ronstan Rashguards are all

comfortable in the winter and protect you from strong sunlight in
the summer with ratings of UPF 50+. Rashguards also dry extremely

Understanding Neoprene:
Neoprene comes in a variety of thicknesses from 1.5 mm to 5 mm. The
thicker the neoprene, the more insulation provided. Some neoprene
comes in a multi-layer construction: a nylon cover protects the
neoprene, a lining reflects body heat to maximize heat retention,
and an inner fabric layer retains the optimum volume of water for
heat stabilization.
For
extra warmth you can layers several pieces of neoprene, like Gill’s

Rashguards can also be worn underneath neoprene to protect your skin
and improve comfort.
Understanding sailing apparel construction and foul weather gear
construction:
While it may that manufacturers are making it as hard as possible to
understand what you’re buying, there are two principles to be aware
of:

The kinds of fabric
Breathable fabric must be layered—it can’t be used by itself. So in
two layer garments, there’s the breathable layer (inside) and the
protective layers (outside). Three layers have an inner “comfort”
layer, the breathable layer, then the outer layer. Four layers, the
most, will usually have an inner layer, a double breathable layer,
and an outer layer.
The
“fabric system” is where manufacturers differentiate themselves the
most. But in the end, the science of breathable fabrics has become
so advanced that all the variations work extremely well. The fabric
that makes up the outer layer is an area that manufacturers take
great pride in being proprietary. The outer layer is what provides
the wind resistance and the waterproof qualities along with the
construction which includes seams that are heat sealed then taped.
